About the lab

Better use of space starts with the life already happening in it.

SmarterSpaceLab is an independent editorial project about practical products, measurements, and modifications for compact homes.

Built from real space constraints

I’m Sean. I have spent years making bedrooms, desks, rentals, and shared living spaces work better—sometimes by choosing a better product, and sometimes by modifying or 3D-printing a part when the off-the-shelf option did not fit.

Those experiences shaped a simple point of view: “space-saving” is not a useful label by itself. A solution earns its footprint only when it solves a real problem without creating a worse one somewhere else.

What you will find here

The focus begins with compact-home organization, desk and gaming spaces, bedroom storage, and cat-friendly living. We look closely at fit, installation, upkeep, durability, and the everyday friction product pages often skip.

Our household includes two long-haired cats, so products involving fur, water, feeding, litter, and shared floor space are not abstract categories. When an article draws on firsthand use, it says so. When it does not, that is made clear too.

What this is not

SmarterSpaceLab is not a catalog of automatically generated “best” lists. It is also not a promise that one product will work in every room. The useful answer may be a purchase, a modification, a DIY solution, or deciding that a product is not worth the space.
